Overview
We generally prefer to avoid collecting data from you in our products and services whenever
possible,
especially personal data and personally identifiable data.
In the cases where we do collect, we strive to be clear about what is collected, its specific
use,
how long it will be retained, and provide you the ability to opt out
whenever
possible.
We may be legally required to disclose collected data to law enforcement or government agencies
in some
situations.
We do not rent, buy or sell personal data from or to others.
We practice data
minimization and we do our best to
collect the minimum personal data necessary to create and improve our apps and services, and to
provide
proper customer support.
Data Collected
Usage Analytics
Focus Firewall does not collect usage analytics. The app has no account, no tracking and no
analytics library, and it never reports how you use it, which settings you enabled or
which websites it blocked. Everything it knows about your browsing stays on your Mac.
Focus Firewall does not collect or send crash logs itself. When an app crashes, macOS itself
writes a crash log and, if your Mac's privacy settings allow it, sends it to Apple. Apple
may then share anonymized crash logs and performance diagnostics with us as the app's
developer, through App Store Connect and Xcode. This is a system feature controlled by
Apple and your macOS settings, not by the app.
Crash logs contain information such as the state of the app, operating system and device at
the time of the crash, but none of your private data. We use them only to find and fix the
cause of the crash. We typically do not retain them; when necessary for troubleshooting, they
will be retained for up to 30 days.
To stop macOS from sharing crash logs with Apple and with us, see the Opt
Out section. Apple may retain crash logs differently; consult their website and
documentation.
Focus Firewall shows the icon of each website on your blocklist. To get them, the app downloads
a single file containing the icons of the built-in blocklist from focusfirewall.com, about
once a month. This file is the same for everyone and the request carries no information about
you or your blocklist. For websites you added yourself, the app asks that website directly
for its icon; focusfirewall.com is never told which websites you added.
Like any download, this request reaches our hosting provider (Amazon Web Services), which keeps
standard server access logs containing your IP address, the time of the request and the name
of the file. These logs say nothing about your blocklist. We do not read them, use them to
identify anyone, or combine them with any other data.
You can turn this off in the app's Settings, under Advanced, by unchecking "Website Icons".
When it is off, the app makes no such requests to focusfirewall.com or to any other website
to pull favicons.
Support Requests
When handling support requests, we collect your email address, metadata in the email header and
any
other information you voluntarily provide, such as crash logs,
screenshots and
other diagnostics.
This information is solely used to provide the support you need and are not used for any other
purpose.
We retain your email address to communicate responses to you. Crash logs and other info are used
for
troubleshooting.
We retain support emails indefinitely in order to:
- have context from previous interactions which may help us answer your future questions more
quickly
and
accurately
- identify broad trends in support requests, which may help us identify and solve problems
with our
products
You can ask us to delete support emails (and any other information contained in these emails) by
contacting
support@focusfirewall.com.
